About Us

The Stone Center for Yoga & Health was founded by Charlotte Chandler Stone (Hamsa) in August of 2004. The mission of the Stone Center is threefold:

  • to make holistic healing approaches such as yoga and yoga therapy, meditation, breathwork, stress reduction, bodywork, yogic philosophy and lifestyle teachings, ayurveda, and other modalities accessible to people of all ages, whether they are in the best of health, or coping with health issues, musculoskeletal problems, stress, or other life challenges, and to be a resource for those seeking holistic healthcare practitioners
  • to provide professional training for those wishing to teach yoga or deepen their understanding of yoga, yoga therapy, meditation, philosophy and other healing arts
  • to reach out to the community via workshops, corporate programs, school programming, lectures, presentations and volunteer efforts

The principal style of yoga taught at the Stone Center is Structural Yoga™ as taught by Mukunda Stiles. Founded in the teachings of Krishnamacharya, the great yoga master, and inspired by the philosophical lineage of Muktananda, this method allows teachers and therapists to adapt sessions to each individual's unique needs and provide teachings that translate off the mat into daily life.

The Stone Center is also home to other respected yoga styles and movement classes, such as Kundalini Yoga, Iyengar-style classes, and Pilates matwork. All classes emphasize safe, healthy movement that is deeply respectful of each student's current situation, needs and goals.

The Center is a place of community, where people of many backgrounds, traditions and interests can gather, practice yoga and meditation, dance, dialogue, come for healing arts sessions, relax, learn, and grow. Through on-site programs, corporations, institutions and organizations can make healing and stress reduction more accessible.

Be it in classes, workshops, presentations, educational programs, or in private sessions, a sincere interest in facilitating our students' healing journey lies at the heart of all Stone Center programs.

There is a yoga each one of us can do ... and that yoga is the "yoga of living." At the Stone Center, we come together to find "our" yoga – a practice that will help us celebrate our vibrant aliveness in the best of times, and that will sustain us through times of personal challenge, growth and transformation.
