"Last year, I had to undergo eye surgery. I was terrified. Even as I had complete trust in my wonderful eye surgeon, I kept waking up at night in a panic. As the date of the surgery approached, the terror became unbearable. I was convinced I would become blind and my terror was as powerful as unjustified. The power of the mind.I turned for help to Charlotte Chandler Stone, who in the last eight months had been my yoga teacher. I had worked one on one with Charlotte before and it had helped. We did breathing, visualization, relaxing yoga poses, and we talked. The following morning, as my husband drove, I listened to a meditation tape and did the visualization exercise Charlotte had recommended. When they measured my pressure right before the surgery, they asked me if I was okay. I felt great, calm, relaxed. My pressure was so low that my husband had to go buy something salty to bring it up! My good teacher's work was yielding its results: no tension, no fear, no anxiety, as evidenced by my surprisingly low blood pressure. I walked into the surgery without the terror that had gripped me for weeks.
I could tell you stories, many stories about all the good I have received in the last two and half years of going to the Stone Yoga Center. At first, on Thursday and Tuesday evenings for yoga for stress and relaxation, then on Monday and Fridays for yoga for bone strength, then Saturday morning for yoga fundamentals, even the Wednesday morning flow yoga is now in my repertoire. Sometimes, I go to Pilate on Tuesday morning. I even tried Tai Chi on Wednesday evening. I go as much and as often as I can.
It's not just that the chronic pain from which I suffered for years has almost disappeared, or that it now takes me less than a week to recover from one of my periodic and now significantly less frequent back crises--as opposed to the months of doctor's visits and physical therapy previously need. Or that I have lost weight without dieting. Or that I am less susceptible to ankle sprains. Or that I handle difficult situations with greater peace and focus than ever. It's not one thing. Yoga has changed my life for the better. Working under the guidance of Charlotte, who is not just incredibly knowledgeable, but also caring and compassionate-- as are each of the teachers with whom I have worked at the Stone Yoga Center--I have learned, and I have changed. My overall health, of body and mind, has improved dramatically. I have undertaken a joyous journey which is delivering the most unexpected gifts and for which I am and will always be grateful. ."
